The - ชี้เฉพาะ (Definite Article)
หลักการใช้ The นำหน้านาม
๑ . ใช้กับนามที่มีเพียงหนึ่งเดียวในโลก
เช่น The sun, The world, The earth, etc.
๒ . คำที่ใช้เป็นพหูพจน์เสมอ
เช่น The people, The cattle, The poultry, etc.
๓ . ใช้เมื่อผู้รับสารรู้ว่ากล่าวถึงสิ่งใด อันใด โดยอาจจะรู้เพราะ
๓ . ๑ เป็นการกล่าวถึงในครั้งที่สองหรือครั้งต่อๆไป
เช่น When I arrived there, I suddenly saw a bird singing on a tree.
( พูดถึงนกครั้งแรกใช้ a)
The bird was very charming.
( พูดถึงนกตัวเดิมครั้งต่อๆไป ใช้ the)
๓.๒ เป็นการกล่าวแบบเจาะจง ซึ่งก็อาจจะรู้ได้จากคำนามนั้นมีประโยคขยาย
เช่น
I love the boy who is sitting behind you .
I would like to know the girl whom you love .
๓.๓ เป็นการกล่าวชัดเจนโดยปริยาย ( คือคนพูดรู้กันกับคนฟัง)
เช่น Please bring me the book on my desk.
( แล้วบนโต๊ะนั้นก็มีหนังสืออยู่เล่มเดียว เป็นต้น)
I’m going to the kitchen.
( ในบ้านนั้นมีแค่ครัวเดียว)
๔ . สิ่งต่อไปนี้ใช้ the นำหน้าเสมอ
ได้แก่ the town, the future, the weather, the wind, the seaside,
the mountains, the country, the universe, the night, the fog, the rain, the sea, the sunshine, the moonlight
๕ . ใช้นำหน้าคำเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด
เช่น the fattest, the tallest, the biggest, the most handsome, etc.
๖ . ใช้กับคำที่ระบุเจาะจงว่ามีเพียงหนึ่งเดียว
ได้แก่ the first, the next, the last, the same, the only
เช่น
She is the first woman to swim across the river.
I go to the same school as they.
๗ . นำหน้าคำนามที่รู้จักกันดี
เช่น
I love Mario, the actor of the love of Siam.
Do you know Mr.Samak, the Prime Minister?
Do you know Nicolas Zarkozy, the president?
๘ . ใช้นำหน้าชื่อต่อไปนี้ ได้แก่
- นำหน้าชื่อประเทศที่มี s เช่น The United States of America, The Philipines
- สถานที่สำคัญ เช่น The Grand Canyon, The royal palace
- ชื่อเฉพาะทางภูมิศาสตร์ เช่น The north pole
- ตำแหน่ง เช่น The Prime Minister, The King, The Queen
- อวัยวะ เช่น The head, The hands
- ลัทธิ เช่น The Marxist doctrine.
- จังหวะ เช่น The tango, the waltz
- อาณาจักร เช่น The Lanna Empire, The Roman Empire
- โรงภาพยนตร์ เช่น The Lido
